Natalie Cederquist Levin is an American sculptor and draftsman whose practice embodies a rare mastery of the human figure.

Trained in the classical traditions of modeling and bronze casting, she has developed a body of work that stands in direct dialogue with the great figurative artists of history.

Natalie’s sculptures demonstrate a rigorous engagement with the human figure, marked by a refined command of anatomy, proportion, and gesture developed through sustained observation and practice. Her work moves beyond literal representation to explore archetypal form, spiritual presence, and the emotional dimensions of human experience. Cast through the ancient lost-wax process, these bronzes balance strength with delicacy and solidity with intimacy, resulting in works that are both structurally assured and quietly contemplative.

Her broader oeuvre is distinguished by an unwavering commitment to the figure as a central artistic language. At a time when much contemporary practice favors abstraction or conceptual frameworks, Natalie’s work reasserts the human form as a powerful vessel for meaning, memory, and transcendence. This dedication is complemented by a versatile practice that extends across drawing, painting, and sculptural studies, reflecting a sustained curiosity and technical fluency that inform and enrich her engagement with form in all its expressions.

Draughtsmanship

Equally celebrated for her draughtsmanship, Natalie’s drawings demonstrate the discipline and vitality of a true master of line. Working primarily in graphite and ink, she brings clarity and energy to each stroke, revealing not only the form but the essence of her subjects. Whether sketching revered spiritual teachers, mythological archetypes, or spontaneous impressions of the human form, her drawings are imbued with immediacy and intimacy.

In these works, Natalie captures more than likeness; she conveys presence. Her sitters, whether drawn from life or from the realm of inspiration,  appear animated by spirit, as if seen simultaneously from without and within. This quality places her within the long tradition of artists for whom drawing is not preparatory but revelatory,  recalling the sensitivity of Leonardo’s studies and the sculptural weight of Rodin’s sketches.

Her drawings, often later translated into sculptural form, serve as both independent artworks and as windows into the creative process. They offer viewers a rare glimpse into the artist’s inner vision,  precise, contemplative, and alive with devotion.

Biography

A California native, Natalie grew up in Santa Barbara, where her artistic journey began in childhood. She received commissions and achievement awards as early as grade school and began attending life-drawing classes at age thirteen. At eighteen, she studied at the University of California, Davis, with San Francisco painter Wayne Thiebaud and sculptor Robert Arneson. She went on to earn her B.A. with high honors in Fine Art from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

In 2009, she further refined her sculptural practice under the mentorship of master figure sculptor Richard MacDonald in Monterey, California. It was there that she began translating her clay studies into bronzes, inaugurating the body of work that would come to define her career.

Natalie’s creative vision

Natalie’s creative vision has been deeply shaped by her spiritual practice and by her pilgrimages to sacred sites and temples in Laos, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Bhutan, and Cambodia. Beginning in 2007, her journeys to India brought her into the presence of Sri Sakthi Narayani Amma, a revered spiritual teacher and avatar. Inspired by these encounters and her immersion in Shaktism, Natalie devoted herself to sculpting Buddhas and Hindu deities. Today, many of these bronzes are housed at Sripuram, where they are honored in daily puja (ritual) at the Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre’s meditation hall, as well as at the Sri Narayani Holistic Center. Her work has also received the blessings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Amma Sri Karunamayi. For Natalie, sculpture is both vocation and dharma: a means of serving the Divine, uplifting humanity, and helping to create a more peaceful, beautiful, and loving world.

In the Studio

Behind every finished sculpture lies a journey few ever witness, the quiet hours of sketching, the shaping of clay, the heat of the foundry, and the final moment when bronze takes on breath and presence.

Natalie Cederquist Levin’s studio is a place where discipline meets devotion. Drawings line the walls, each one a meditation in graphite or ink, capturing the essence of her sitters and inspirations. On worktables, clay figures emerge gradually under her hands, their gestures refined until they seem to hold both weight and spirit.

The ancient lost-wax process brings these forms into permanence. From clay to wax to bronze, each stage carries its own alchemy, requiring patience, precision, and reverence. Natalie oversees every step, ensuring the soul of the original remains intact.

But behind the scenes is more than process, it is presence. In the stillness of her workspace, art becomes prayer, and the human figure becomes a bridge between the tangible and the timeless.

“Unique is your gift, Natalie, to capture Siva in the form Sadasiva and Gurudeva. You capture the Light of the soul, atma, in your creations and particularly this emanates through Gurudeva’s eyes in these beautiful drawings. He is right there. Aum Namah Sivaya.”

"Natalie's sculpture is truly unique and inspirational. There is an influence from classical Hindu/Buddhism but with a sensitive adaptation to the West. She has been able to use her experiences in Hawaii and the American Southwest to inspire us all."

Roger White, MD – Formerly chief of cardiology at Straub Clinic Honolulu, Author of Soar,
Hawaii

“Wow!  I have met many beautiful people in my life; a few of them had an inner beauty that matched their outward presentation.  Even fewer of them lived and created beauty as easily as they breathed.  These gods and goddesses humble my heart and leave me speechless (for me a most unusual condition).  I feel honored and blessed that the lotus of my life has opened enough to make room in my heart for the joy you bring.”

Jim Shepherd – Architect, Artist, Teacher & American Novelist,

Massachusetts

“What you create is more than a sculpture or work of art.  What you create goes into a class of its own - it touches on something mythic, indescribable with words.  ‘Absolutely beautiful’ just doesn't seem to capture this.  Just looking at it in a picture, I can feel my blood pressure go down, my heart open-up and my soul touch into a deep, lovely space.  You are a master at what you do, and I feel honored just to look at it. Wow!”

Molly Roberts, MD, MS – Board of Directors for the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine, Past President of the American Holistic Medical Association
San Francisco
